The Department of Crop Protection is probably the largest department in the Faculty of Agriculture. Its main tasks are teaching and research in the areas of

agricultural entomology, plant pathology, agricultural zoology, apiculture, nematology, pesticides and environmental toxicology and pest management.

 The academic programs

The Department offers the following academic programs:

•  B.Sc. Program

         This program is composed of two basic components: a compulsory component which is a pre-requisite for further studies and includes General Plant     Pathology,Introduction to Agricultural Zoology and Entomology. The other component offers the following options:

•   Plant Pathology.
•   Entomology.
•   Pesticides and Environmental Toxicology.

•  Intermediate Diploma in Beekeeping and Honey Production.

              This is a two-year intensive training program focusing on proper beekeeping skills.

•  Post-graduate Programs
•  Ph.D. Program

The Department offers research-based Ph.D. programs in the different disciplines related to crop protection. The main research areas include: Agricultural Entomology, Plant Pathology, Pesticides and Weed Sciences.

•  M.Sc. Programs

            Two M.Sc. programs are offered:

•  M.Sc. (Agric.). This is a degree offered by research, only. The research areas include: Entomology, Plant Pathology, Weed Science and Pesticides.
•  M.Sc. (Crop Protection). This degree is offered both by course work (two semesters) and a dissertation. The research areas are the same as in the case of M.Sc. (Agri
•  Ph.D. Program

The degree is offered solely by research and the research areas are the same as specified above.

• Post-graduate Diploma in Desert Locust Control

This is a one-year training program emphasizing field training on survey reporting and analysis of locust habitat and population dynamics. The Diploma is intended for training of local and regional Plant Protection staff. Candidates from most of the Arab countries and some Africans have attended the program, which started in 2001.

 Teaching and Research Facilities

•  Laboratories

The following laboratories are available for teaching and research: Entomology labs, Plant Pathology Lab, Pesticides lab, computer Lab.

•  A Departmental Library, which contains valuable resources in the different aspects of crop protection. The library is also connected with the Electronic Library of the University of Khartoum.
•  Lecture Rooms

   Two lecture rooms are available for teaching and seminars for under and post-graduate students.
