The Department of Horticulture is one of several Departments that comprise the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Khartoum.
The Department of Horticulture was established in 1960.
Prof. J.P. Hudson from Nottingham University was appointed to establish this department. Both Dr. Abdalla Ahmed Abdalla and Dr. Saad Ahmed Bashir El-Abbadi participated in establishing the department after obtaining their Ph. D. degrees from USA.
* The building of the Department and the nursery of flowers and ornamental plants were completed in 1962.
Horticulture is one of several specializations offered to the students at the beginning of the 5th semester. The students continue their studies for six additional semesters in horticulture and related subjects to graduate with BS.C. Agriculture Honors (Horticulture).

The Department is housed in a separate building occupied since 1966. The building includes two lecture room (100 each) an undergraduate laboratory, a research and tissue culture laboratory, offices and a store. The Department has a nursery containing a bamboo lath and Net houses, both equipped for mist propagation in addition to two fiberglass houses and one plastic house. The Department owns a six feddan orchard used for demonstration and teaching and another 30 feddans orchard in the University Farm used for commercial fruit and vegetable production and postgraduate research activities. The department also runs a nursery for propagation and maintenance of fruit seedlings, located in the University Farm. The Department shares with others in a demonstration farm for the crop production field training of the students.

- To provide a firm foundation in science, skills and arts fundamental to horticulture.
- To conduct and maintain effective and high quality teaching and research programs leading to B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph. D. degrees aiming at maximizing student potential through exposure to diverse courses and practical experiences.
- Through dedicated teaching, research and interaction with society, the Department seeks to improve its contributions to the general welfare.
- To conduct applied research to support and enhance the horticultural industries.
- To provide services, training and technology transfer to the general public.
- To identify and address the needs and problems related to the production of horticultural crops, their post-harvest quality, maintenance and utilization of their many products
